out to the communityCommunity outreach is an important part of the mission of Beaconsfield United Church. It takes many forms and is provided by many people. Here are some of the ways we get involved. You are invited to join us and share your talents. Family Life Centre:
Along with
several other area churches, BUC is part of the Family Life Centre.
This
service provides members of the West Island communities with
information
on community resources; free short term counselling and hold periodic
workshops
on the needs of contemporary families. Mother & Tots:
A drop-in
facility for stay-at-home mothers and their pre-school children. Come
in
for a chat, coffee, crafts and companionship. Every Thursday 'New to You' clothing
boutique: A
very successful initiative by BUC, this is a boutique offering
great
bargains in good quality men's, women's and children's used clothing.
You
are invited to Room 4 in the church each Thursday (9:30am-1:30 pm)
West
Island
Readaptation Centre: As part of its mission of reaching out to the
local community, BUC has welcomed in its midst a goup of intellectually
handicapped individuals. Directed by Shelley Goulet, this group
has become part of BUC's church life by undertaking several
administrative
tasks such as; bulletin folding and collating, poster design,sorting
clothing
and and some maintenance duties (dusting, cleaning, watering fo
plants,
etc.). In addition to participating in numerous stimulating activities,
they have the opportunity their artistic talents that can be seen
throughout
the church premises. Dix Mille Villages: Supported
by Beaconsfield United Church, Cedar Park United Church,
St.Columba-by-the-Lake and the United Church Mission &
Service Fund St.Columba House: Situated
in the
disadvantaged area of Pointe Saint.Charles this important community
centre
is a major project of the United Church of Canada. Partly supported by
the Mission & Service Fund, Beaconsfield United Church continually
supports it through gifts of clothing, food stuffs and monies raised
the
United Church Women's group at BUC. Montreal City Mission:
Supported
by the Mission & Service Fund, this mission is located in the
centre
of Montréal. Its main activities include day camps for inner
city
children, temporary housing and legal aid for refugees, support for
people
living with AIDS, low cost housing and other projects aimed at allowing
those who are most disadvantage to live in dignity. Other
organizations
and community groups Scouts, Beavers and Cubs: The Scouting movement is very popular at Beaconsfield United Church. Well organized and supported by parents, the aim of these groups is to encourage responsibility and to teach high moral standards amongst the youth.
Several girls' groups of different ages meet at Beaconsfield United Church.Their objectives are to contribute to the development of the individual, encourage the children to become responsible citizens, develop love of nature through outdoor activities, contribute to the acquisiton of household skills and to encourage the youth to to serve others.
SPIN - Ping-pong Club: This
is a group of congenial people who come together twice a week to enjoy
the game of ping-pong. La Leche League (Pointe-Claire/Dorval
Group):
Hillcrest Pre-school:
This pre-school
is a non-profit and cooperatively run.. Classes take place 4 days
a week. Garderie Maisonneuve
(Daycare):
This professional daycare centre is open 5 days a week throughout the
entire
year. Tai Chi Taoist Society: The
art of practising good health, multiple benefits and available to
everyone. Lakeshore
Unitarian Universalist
Church: This church worships in the same building as Beaconsfield
United
Church. Services and children's programmes are held every Sunday from
September
to June at 10:30am. Ballet Classes: Ballet
classes
for children 3 years and over are given each Monday from 4:00pm in the
